Is there not a cause?

By Jeanne McGrew

Ephesians 3:15 presents an important principle from the word of God about Family.  Paul wrote in verse 14 “For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, 15. From whom every family in heaven and on earth is named…….”

Ellicotts commentary, as well as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges notes, the original word (patria) here rendered "family" is literally derived from the word "father" (pater). It has been proposed to render it fatherhood, and translate, from whom all fatherhood derives its name--all lower fatherhood being in fact, a shadow, and in fact, derivative from the Fatherhood of God. It is difficult to preserve in English the point of the Gr. here. “Father” and “family” have no verbal kinship, while patêr and patria have.

These two words speak to the character and nature of our heavenly Father as being the same, both in heaven and on earth.

Today, the stable, life-giving foundation of ‘family’ is being challenged and threatened on all fronts, spiritually and naturally.  Jesus lays the basic principle governing division from Matthew 12:28. We read, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” We know the house built on the sand succumbs to the storm…but… Matthew 7:25 “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house and it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock.”

Family is the bedrock of society. When culture shifts a God given standard, society begins to erode.  It’s been this way since the beginning of time.  Division is always at work to destroy the very thing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit long for: Oneness. That is a life changing oneness with Him and each other.

This oneness is to be lived out in marriage, seen in the union of man and woman, established in the home as God increases stewardship with children and it is this union of marriage and family that lay the foundation of Church.

We, the church, are fighting a battle for family and home.  There are times we hold our peace, but there is a day and hour where we must not allow our voices to be silent. Is there not a cause?

We raise the same standard of Christ that Jesus held as he lived in the world.  Knowing as they hated him, they will hate us for declaring truth.  Man loves his darkness and will flee the light, or simply as we see today, endeavor to remove it and replace it with his own light.

If we don’t continue to battle for our families we will find ourselves sitting in a world that has shaped us and bound us to the laws of man that we will ultimately have to find the strength and courage to say, “ Whether it is right in the sight of God to obey you or God, you must judge, But we cannot but speak of what know.” ~ Acts 4:20.

May God’s grace continue to rest upon us all that we might with all boldness continue to speak His word as we ought, that our lights may continue to shine brightly with a true expression of honor and love for all people, without compromising His truth.
